The city of Krakow has significant historical ties to the Jewish community. The well-known Jewish quarter, called Kazimierz, has been one of the most important places in Poland and Europe due to its heritage and history. In fact, Kazimierz is considered the place where European Jewish culture flourished.
In this part of the historic center of Krakow, some of the most important and well-known buildings in the city were constructed during the Middle Ages. Additionally, in its streets, some of the most atrocious acts of WWII were committed. Today, it is one of the most visited corners of Krakow for its heritage legacy, its past, and its vintage bars and shops.
Through our Free Tour, you will get to know the popular Jewish quarter of Krakow. We will start the tour from the Katyń Cross Square, at the foot of the Wawel Castle walls. We will learn about the origins of the quarter and discover how it was home to one of the most important Jewish communities in the world, along with some of the most impressive medieval corners. Two of the highlights of the tour will be the different synagogues and the old Jewish cemetery, places of great interest that amaze visitors.
The second part of the Free Tour takes place across the Vistula River, in what was the old Jewish ghetto, named Podgorze, where various atrocities were committed by Nazi troops. We will visit the Bridge of Love (Bernatek), the famous old factory of Oskar Schindler, and the Heroes of the Ghetto Square, in honor of the victims of the Holocaust.
