The city of Berlin cannot be understood without its most recent history. The Cold War completely marked the capital of Germany, dividing it into two parts and being one of the conflict points between the two blocs. Visible remnants from this period still exist, some as famous as the Berlin Wall or Checkpoint Charlie, which welcome thousands of visitors daily.
In this Free Tour, you will learn about the most important places in Berlin during the Cold War, all accompanied by an expert guide. We will start the tour at the symbolic Palace of Tears. From there, we will head to the well-known “Ghost Station” of Nordbahnhof, an underground division point of Berlin and Germany. We will learn about the history of this famous station and the harsh moments experienced there.
The next stop will be the Bernauer Strasse Memorial, where we will see the best-preserved part of the Berlin Wall and learn about the history of one of the most famous constructions in recent history. We will hear stories from survivors who crossed from one side to the other and will be able to view some of the most iconic murals. Other important points on the route will be the Church of Reconciliation or the well-known “death strip”.
Overall, an ideal Free Tour to learn about Berlin’s tragic past during the Cold War.
